The genesis of the Institute of Mathematics is inseparably linked with the establishment of the University “St. Cyril and Methodius” in 1946 — a pivotal year that marked the dawn of organized academics in Macedonia. Within the then Faculty of Philosophy, two divisions were created: the Historical-Philological Division and the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It was within this latter division that the Chairs of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography with Ethnology commenced their mission. On December 16, 1946, they inaugurated the first courses of higher education, and for the first time in Macedonian history, instruction was delivered in the Macedonian language. At the Chair of Mathematics, this pioneering endeavor was entrusted to three professors and two assistants, whose dedication laid the cornerstone of mathematical scholarship in the country.
In 1958, the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was elevated to the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, while the Chair of Mathematics was transformed into the Institute of Mathematics. The reforms of 1977 brought further institutional evolution: the Institute of Mathematics, together with other mathematics chairs from the technical faculties in Skopje, established the Faculty of Mathematics within the Center for Mathematical-Technical Sciences at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius.” In 1985, subsequent organizational restructuring led to the re-establishment of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Faculty of Mathematics was once again reorganized into the Institute of Mathematics, functioning as an autonomous academic unit within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. This structure, preserved to the present day, reflects both continuity and adaptability. The Institute is organized into four divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis, Topology, and Applied Mathematics.
Today, the Institute of Mathematics stands as a distinguished academic and scientific institution, recognized for its contributions to research and for its unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching. Throughout its long tradition, the Institute has safeguarded its intellectual heritage while embracing the currents of modern science and technological progress. Through twelve newly established study programs — spanning undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels — the Institute has aligned its educational mission with the demands of contemporary professional challenges and the latest trajectories of scientific inquiry. In doing so, it continues to cultivate generations of scholars and professionals, equipped not only with rigorous knowledge but also with the capacity to respond to the complexities of modern life.
The Institute of Mathematics embodies both tradition and innovation: a guardian of national academic identity and a beacon of scientific advancement. Its history is not merely an institutional chronicle, but a testament to the enduring pursuit of knowledge and the vital role of mathematics in shaping the intellectual and cultural fabric of Macedonia.
