XXV Workshop for Young Mathematicians "Computational Topology" will take place in Kraków, Poland, at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University (Kraków, ul. Łojasiewicza 6), during the period 22 - 28 September 2024.
The subject of computational topology is a relatively new branch of Mathematics, which comes from merging algebraic topology methods with computational tools. It find various applications in data analysis and as a tool for better understanding dynamical systems. One of the important branches of computational topology is combinatorial topological dynamics. It provides tools to understand basic behavior of dynamical systems via combinatorial analogue of the Conley index theory. Given a vector field in Euclidean space, these tools can, under certain assumptions, detect invariant sets like stationary points and periodic orbits. The advantage of this approach is its potential for full automation in computer programs, leading to practical applications.
Another well-known example is the persistent homology, which roughly speaking, measure holes in the space and their relevance. It's used in diverse fields like stock market analysis, detecting breast cancer, and pinpointing peak performance moments in sports like hockey or basketball.
If you are interested in the subject, there are some papers to be read:
Regarding logistics, the Workshop will be conducted in-person. There will be next announcement at the beginning of July with information about registration, possibilities of giving a talk or showing a poster and other organizational issues. At this moment I am able to provide the list of confirmed guests:
- Herbert Edelsbrunner (IST Austria)
- Thomas Wanner (George Mason University)
- Bogdan Batko (Jagiellonian University)
- Paweł Dłotko (Dioscuri Centre in Topological Data Analysis)
- Michał Lipiński (Jagiellonian University, Institute of Science and Technology Austria)
In order to
receive mail with the
second announcement, please
